Families invited to find sanctuary with Serendip park visit

Parks Victoria and Amaze have joined forces to make going to a park a more enjoyable experience for families and children on the autism spectrum.
The result of the collaboration is a new social script resource for families with young children who visit Serendip Sanctuary in Lara.

Families invited to trial social script

The sanctuary is described as an excellent example of the open grassy woodlands and wetlands of the volcanic Western Plains and is an ideal place to learn about and experience bird life and wetlands ecology.
Among the attractions are 150 species of bird, including the magnificent tawny frogmouth, emus and eastern grey kangaroos.
Parks Victoria access inclusion coordinator John Kenwright says the project has been prompted by the fact that children on the autism spectrum can become overwhelmed or distressed in unfamiliar places.
The social script helps prepare families and children for what they are likely to see and experience when they visit the park.
The resource is now complete and Parks Victoria is inviting families to trial it before it is made available to the general public.
