How she has come to embrace her autism and forge a career as a personal trainer and mentor makes Elise, 20, a great signing for Amaze’s Autism & Employment Forum on 8th November.
Elise will share her lived experience.
Elise says: “I always knew I was different but I didn’t know why. I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when I was 11.
“Autism is something that when I was younger, I felt as though I couldn’t escape. The continuous desire to be accepted and ‘fit in’ in a world I have felt I never belonged in, troubled me.
“It was exhausting and was often met with rejection. I blamed my autism for the way I was marginalised, bullied, alienated and disenfranchised in schools.
“When I look back it makes sense that I thought of autism in such a negative way because everyone else, especially my schools, seemed to associate the spectrum with weakness. They saw autism as a disadvantage and a problem.
“I am using my autism to succeed academically, socially, and also on the sporting field.
“Autism is not something I suffer from. I suffer from the repercussions of other people’s lack of understanding of autism and their ignorance.
There were times when everything felt so hard. But once I learnt to live with it (autism), and make peace with it, it has given me so many opportunities.
“Everyone has something, I have autism, it isn’t a disability but a different ability.”
Olivia Hill
Olivia Hill, guest experiences manager at SEALIFE Melbourne, is also presenting at the Autism & Employment Forum.
Olivia Hill: Sea life expert.
Olivia has always loved the sea. Since a young age she has pursued volunteer work and gained experience in many aspects of marine science, biology and tourism.
Olivia has been working for the Melbourne Aquarium since its opening in 2000.
During this time she has gained a variety of experiences in the business ranging from front line ticket sales through to currently managing the Presentations, Education and Guest Experiences departments.
Bernadette Gigliotti
Amaze is thrilled to announce that Bernadette Gigliotti, Chief Executive Officer of The Australian Centre for Career Education (ACCE), will present at Amaze’s Autism & Employment Forum.
The ACCE is the trading name for the Career Education Association of Victoria (CEAV) and is a founding member of the Career Industry Council of Australia, the national peak industry body for careers practitioners across the country.
Bernadette is a professional career development practitioner with more than 25 years professional experience in careers counselling in state, catholic and independent schools.
Bernadette Gigliotti: wealth of experience.
She is an active member of the CEAV and holds membership with the National Career Development Association of America (NCDA) and the International Association of Educational and Vocational Guidance (IAEVG).
The CEAV is the peak, state-based association for career practitioners in secondary schools in Victoria.
Lead developer of curriculum framework
Bernadette has held the position of President, Vice President and Secretary to CICA in recent years.
Her work on this committee has assisted in the introduction of Professional Standards for Australian Career Practitioners in schools and The Australian Blueprint for Career Development Competency Framework.
Bernadette was the lead developer of the Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework, designed for use with young people aged 12 to 19 years.
She has delivered professional development to students and teachers and has also represented career practitioners at state, national and international forums.
Bernadette is the proud mother of two adult daughters with disabilities. Her youngest daughter is on the spectrum and is working in open employment.
She believes that all young people have career talent and should be acknowledged for the contributions they can make to building a better society for everyone.
Dani Fraillon
Dani Fraillon, renowned for her role as Partner, People & Change at Price Waterhouse Coopers, will be a headline speaker at the Autism & Employment Forum.
Dani is a senior consulting Partner who has consulted in Australia and internationally for the past 18 years.
For the past 22 years she has also worked in the disability sector (see details below) and at present is consulting on increasing employment opportunities for people with disability in Australia.

Dani has worked in the United States, United Kingdom, China, India, Hong Kong and South Korea on consulting assignments for organisations including Novartis, Bank of America, Westpac, ANZ Bank, SA PowerNetworks, Optus, Siemens, Commonwealth Bank, Ernst and Young, Lend Lease, Hong Kong Hospital Authority and the Australian Government.
Dani has also consulted deeply in the disability sector for the past 22 years, having been involved in: performance measures for Early Intervention Services; the design and construction of the first playground for all abilities in Australia; the Women’s Hospital ethics committee; founding chair of the Genetic Support Network as part of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
