This forum will discuss how to prepare autistic students for a smooth transition into secondary school and is designed for both teachers and parents. We will be providing information about ways that schools and families can support autistic people to have the best possible experience starting secondary school.

Guest Speakers
Our guest speakers will each share a unique perspective and practical advice and include that of a school principal, a parent and an autistic young person who has been through the transition.
Max Williams from the I Can Network (above) will share his lived experience.
Vanessa Thomas has been working in the disability field for 30 years. In that time, she has had a diverse career including direct support of adults and children with disability and has worked for Scope, Amaze, and Carers Victoria.
Vanessa is now Manager of Community Services at Family Planning Victoria and is finishing off a Master’s degree in Disability Policy and Practice with a thesis relating to the sexual health literacy of girls with high-functioning autism. She has two teenage daughters with high functioning Autism who are both learning to drive and one is doing VCE. This is causing many grey hairs.
Anna Rigoni has worked in education for 22 years across the independent and state school sectors. Anna has worked in a variety of provisions including alternative, specialist and mainstream schools. Her first principal ship was at Northern School for Autism. She is currently the principal of Charles La Trobe College.
