My autism diagnosis as an adult: 'It was pretty scary, but also quite liberating'

Amaze CEO Fiona Sharkie was recently invited to speak on ABC radio about the diagnosis of autism in adults.
Joining Fiona in the Southbank studio for the interview with Hilary Harper were Sarah Munnings and Paul Micallef, who had the following to say about their journey to diagnosis.

Sarah: “I started looking into whether I had autism spectrum disorder after my son was diagnosed at the age of six.
“Before we had Scott diagnosed I didn’t know anything was different about Scott because he was very similar to me.
“As we went through the process of diagnosis we’d be checking off lists. A lot of the traits were resonating with me. It was pretty scary, but also quite liberating”.
Paul: “I read a book, an autobiography called Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger’s (John Elder Robison). It’s a fascinating book, but the turning point for me was meeting other adults on the spectrum.
“The very first support group I went to, I’d not been diagnosed when I went there. I was fearful I’d be called out and not welcomed but it was quite the opposite.
“I’d spent my life feeling like I was crazy and not being believed when trying to communicate my needs. So having a word to explain it, that really helped”. Click here to hear the full interview
